«Istanbul Contrasts» collection by Dice Kayek
«Istanbul Contrasts» collection by Dice Kayek

At the exhibition «Jameel Prize» a collection of «Istanbul Contrasts» by Turkish brand Dice Kayek was presented. The history of the brand began in 1992, when the two sisters, Ece and Ayse Kayek decided to combine their efforts in the love for fashion. In the first collection of the brand 13 shirts from white poplin were submitted. Each model had its own design and its cut lines. From the point of view of Fashion Astrology, we could find here 12 Zodiac signs + is another, very personal image. We have already carried out similar work with emerging designers, and this idea was always successful. Jean Franco Ferre worked very successfully with white shirts, a collection of white men’s shirts of Antonio Marras marked the beginning of his career, Karen Millen started her way in fashion with them. Today, the white shirt has become an integral part of the office wardrobe and a great option for the case when you have nothing to wear again. We can mention a few European brands, which can be ordered online, with delivery to Russia: Hawes & Curtis;  TMLevin. White shirts by Dice Kayek enjoyed great commercial success, so the sisters decided to come to grips with the design.

As is well known, the most interesting discoveries occur across disciplines and different traditions. Dice Kayek designers maintain a harmonious balance between traditional and modern splendor of the East Parisian high fashion trends. In 2009, they created a collection «Contrasts of Istanbul», which was exhibited in major museums around the world. Among them: the Museum of Decorative Arts (Paris), the Museum of Amsterdam and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Istanbul). In 2013, this collection has received an international award in the field of contemporary art and design from the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2014, this work became the winner of the «Jameel Prize».

Inspiration source for sisters-designers became amazing Muslim architecture, more precisely, the two most famous architectural monuments: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Hagia Sophia (Ayya Sofia) was originally a Christian church. It was built in 360 by the Emperor Constantine. Then the temple was three times reduced after the fires and destruction. In 537, the building was constructed in the form in which it has been preserved to the present day. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Mehmed Fatih rebuilt temple into a mosque by adding a minaret. In the middle of the XVI century to finish the temple Islamic decorative elements were added. The length of the temple is 100 meters and width is 70 m. Basilica crowned by giant dome system. Dome height 55, 6 m is considered one of the most beautiful in Turkey and among the top five highest domes in the world. Beautiful mosaics of Hagia Sophia date to the middle IX-end of X centuries.

The Blue Mosque has a more peaceful history. Its construction began in 1609 on the orders of Sultan Ahmed and lasted 7 years. The name of the mosque got through finishing blue tiles. Blue Mosque is the largest mosque in the area in Istanbul. Contrary to tradition, it has six minarets: four on the sides of the building and two in the corners of the courtyard. Legend tells that the sultan ordered the construction of a mosque with golden minarets (in Turkish «altin» means gold). To build minarets of pure gold was virtually impossible. Architect pretended not to hear, and built a six minarets («alti» in Turkish means six). Apparently, the conversation took place in the period of Mercury retrograde. Whatever it was, may be, the position of the planets, or tricks of the architect, as a result we can contemplate one of the most beautiful works of Muslim architecture.

Look at the beautiful dresses from the collection of «Contrasts of Istanbul». It clearly read the individual elements of architectural works, skillfully made by designers. Draping and puffed sleeves echo the shape of the great dome of Hagia Sophia. Precious brocade resembles fine mosaics of the church. Gold thread embroidery and antique glass beads echoes the luxurious finish of the iconostasis. Numerous folds of the dress of white muslin artfully refract light, which plays the same way as under the dome of the mosque.

As part of the educational program in the New Manezh sisters Kayek told about their work, sources of inspiration. Young designers can take note of this unusual source of inspiration and create fashions based on the architecture monuments.
